 Robert W. Reed  M. D.

 Born March 29, 1918 in Creston, Iowa. Graduated from Creston High School in 1936 and was a member of the National Honor Society. Attended Creston Junior College from 1936 until 1938 before transferring State University of Iowa where he graduated in 1940 with a B. S..

Enlisted in the armed forces in 1940. He was on active duty as a pilot 1941 - 1946 serving with the 90th Bombardment Squadron 3rd Attack Group in the SWPA from 1942 - 1944 flying 60 missions. His honors include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with OLC, Bronze Star and Unit Citation.

Married Lucille Soland in 1942. Lucille graduated from State University of Iowa in Nursing in 1941.

Returned to State University of Iowa after the war graduating in 1950. He served a one internship at Harper Hospital, Detroit, Michigan. He returned to State University of Iowa and completed General Surgery residency in 1955. He became board certified in General Surgery and a Fellow of ACS in 1956. Dr. Reed went into surgical practice with Dr. Edwin A. Crowell, another Iowa trained surgeon, in Galesburg, Illinois.

He retired from surgical practice in 1988. He and Lucille had 6 children and 10 grandchildren. Bob and Lucille's hobbies icluded travel, bridge, bowling, gardening, music and reading. They both attended numerous reunions of the 3rd Attack Group.


OBITUARY

Robert W. Reed Headed West on February 8, 2013 at his home in Galesburg, Illinois.

Robert was born on March 29, 1918 in Creston, Iowa to Arthur B. and Carrie Smith Reed. He married Lucille Gladys Soland on April 21, 1942 in Galveston, Texas. Bob and Lucille celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last April. Lucille survives. Also surviving are two sons, Robert W. Reed of Las Vegas, Nev. and James E. (and Mary) Reed of Seffner, Fla.; a daughter, Janice Reed (and Theodore) Hellman of Mill Valley, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Tammy Reed of Castle Rock, Colo.; son-in-law, Nels Freeman of Highland Ranch, Colo.; 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, David J. Reed on November 2, 2011; two daughters, Carrie L. Lebolt on August 27, 2010 and Katherine L. Freeman on October 30, 2004; a brother, Arthur L. Reed and a sister, Alaire Sheimo.

Robert was a surgeon in Galesburg for 33 years from 1955 to 1988, originally joining the surgical practice of Dr. Edwin Crowell to form Crowell and Reed.
He served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps from 1941 through 1946, retiring with the rank of Major. He was a member of the 90th Bombardment Squadron, 3rd Bombardment Group. Robert was a 1936 graduate of Creston High School; a 1940 graduate of the University of Iowa and graduated from the University of Iowa School of Medicine in 1950. He completed his surgical residency at the University Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, in 1955.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Soangetaha County Club. He was an avid bowler and golfer. He enjoyed singing and loved music.                           He loved to fly as a private pilot.
